West Bengal: A man dies by suicide after India’s defeat in the World Cup final


A 23-year-old man allegedly died by suicide in West Bengal’s Bankura district after becoming distressed over India’s loss in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup final.

The incident occurred on Sunday night near Belliatori Cinema Hall area in Bankura.

According to police, the man, identified as Rahul Lohar, also known as the ‘cricket freak’, took a leave to watch the final.

He ended his life by hanging himself in his room after India’s defeat in the final.

Speaking about the incident, Babu Uttam Sur, Lohar’s brother-in-law, said: “He committed suicide by wrapping a veil around his neck at home after being unable to accept (India’s) defeat to Australia in the final.” From the Cricket World Cup.”

He added: “No one was home at the time of the accident.”

Following the accident, local police arrived at the scene, recovered Lohar’s body and sent it to forensic medicine.

Speaking about the incident, Bankura Additional Superintendent of Police Siddharth Dorje said, “Nothing can be said about the matter until the investigation is over. Meanwhile, a case of unnatural death has been registered in the matter and the body has been found.” “It has been sent to Bankura Samilani Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem.”

Notably, India lost to Australia by six wickets in the carefully watched CWC 2023 final held in Ahmedabad on Sunday, ending the host team’s unbeaten run in the tournament. The Australians chased down 241 in just 43 overs with Travis Head scoring 137 off 120 balls.
