Kolkata:
A 23-year-old cricket fan could not bear the Indian team’s loss in the World Cup final and died by suicide, his brother-in-law said on Monday.
Rahul Lohar, who worked in a sari shop and also a caterer, was found dead at his home in West Bengal’s Bankura district last night after India lost the title match to Australia by six wickets in Ahmedabad.
“He was an ardent fan and loved the team more than himself. After India lost to Australia, he could not bear the loss and died by suicide around 11 last night,” said Uttam Sur, the man’s brother-in-law. Reporters.
He added that he missed work and watched the match on a projector, adding that no one was home when the accident occurred.
“I was informed last night and I rushed to his house to find that he had been taken to the primary health center in Bellator. There he was declared dead. His younger brother, who was staying with him, found him hanging when he arrived home. His mother was staying in another house,” Mr. Sur said.
The police did not comment on the case, but registered a case of unnatural death.
Police sources said there is no suspicion of any criminal angle, but an investigation is underway to find out whether the World Cup defeat actually prompted the man to take the extreme step and whether he was suffering from mental health issues.
